Privacy is also a key consideration - and not all manufacturers approach data control in the same way. With AI assistance baked into the glasses, some providers will use your responses to train their AI, whereas others put privacy first. 


For instance, the HTC VIVE Eagle supports on-device processing for certain features, helping reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent to cloud-based services. VIVE AI never takes user data for training. Certain AI features may use supported third-party AI services for processing.


How are AI glasses different from regular glasses?

The difference between AI smart glasses and regular glasses is the technology - AI glasses are usually slightly thicker and heavier than standard spectacles, due to the amount of technology packed into the frames.


These glasses pack batteries, cameras, sensors, circuit boards and speakers into frames that look similar to regular spectacles. They are therefore often 20-60g heavier and generally come with slightly thicker frames to house the technology.

Your photos and videos are only shared with your phone, not the cloud, and if you do need to ask more complex queries, you can use Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s GPT. Some AI-enabled features may require data to be transmitted to supported services for processing. However, your requests to these services are de-identified, meaning it’s harder for LLMs to link your queries  with your personal data and build a profile of you.

How long have AI glasses been around?


Here’s a brief history of glasses with smart features enabled, showing how we’ve arrived at ‘normal’-looking glasses with inbuilt AI features:


1960: Morton Heilig created the Telesphere Mask, regarded as the first head-mounted display, designed for wide-angle stereoscopic viewing.


1961: Engineers at Philco Corporation developed the Hindsight headset, which had a single cathode-ray tube (CRT) display on each eye, using a magnetic head-tracking system.


1968: The ‘Sword of Damocles’, a headset so large it had to be suspended from the ceiling, projected information onto a display in front of the user, which updated as they moved their head.


1984: Steve Mann, of MIT Media Lab, begins development of EyeTap, projecting information directly into the pupil of the wearer.


1989: Reflection Technology unveils the Private Eye, a single-eye head-mounted display to simulate a 15-inch monochrome display 18 inches in front of the wearer. It was designed for technicians and researchers.


2012: Google Glass was unveiled, bringing a notifications screen and camera. Some of the first questions around privacy with smart glasses were raised, with shops and restaurants banning the device.
